WhatsApp has announced that it will discontinue its service on older Android smartphones that are no longer receiving annual system updates.
The platform, which is widely used across the globe, has informed users that starting January 1, 2025, WhatsApp will no longer function on these devices. The move is part of the company’s strategy to introduce new features and capabilities that require more modern hardware, effectively phasing out older systems.
In a statement, WhatsApp confirmed that the decision was necessary to ensure users could take full advantage of the latest features and improvements, which may not be supported on older devices. This change means that some Android devices, including several models from Samsung, Sony, LG, Motorola, and HTC, will no longer be able to use WhatsApp after the specified date.
The affected Android devices include:
– Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
– Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V
– LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
– Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014
– HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
In addition, iPhone users who are running iOS 15.1 will also see restrictions. WhatsApp will no longer be available on these Apple devices starting in May 2025.
