In a resounding vote, the United Nations General Assembly has adopted a historic resolution in support of Palestine’s full membership in the organization, disregarding strong opposition from the United States. This landmark decision has garnered widespread support from numerous African nations, including Tanzania, marking a significant step towards recognizing Palestine as a sovereign state within the United Nations.

The resolution, as reported by DW Kiswahili, affirms Palestine’s rightful entitlement to attain full UN membership and calls upon the UN Security Council to endorse Palestine’s aspirations of securing a seat within the organization. The voting results were overwhelmingly in favor, with an impressive 143 member states voting in support. However, the United States, alongside eight other countries, including Israel, stood in firm opposition, casting their dissenting votes. Additionally, 25 countries abstained from voting due to their absence during the session.
This decisive resolution serves to acknowledge Palestine as the 194th member of the United Nations, signifying a significant international recognition of the Palestinian statehood. The application for full membership will now be presented to the UN Security Council for consideration. It is noteworthy that in the previous month, when Palestine’s membership bid was put forth before the Security Council, it encountered a veto from the United States, despite enjoying substantial backing from the General Assembly. It is widely anticipated that the Biden administration will employ its veto power once more to impede the passage of this new resolution. Deputy US Ambassador to the United Nations, Robert Wood, has unequivocally affirmed the administration’s opposition to the recently adopted resolution.
The potential accession of Palestine as a full-fledged member of the United Nations bears significant implications, as it would signify global acknowledgment of Palestine as an independent and sovereign nation. However, Israel, a close ally of the United States, has staunchly opposed this move, deeming it a threat to its interests and security. Consequently, this development is expected to engender further disputes and pose a formidable challenge to attaining a lasting and equitable resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which has persisted for decades.
