Elon Musk on Tuesday said his Neuralink startup had installed a brain implant in its first human patient with “promising” initial results.
The operation took place on Sunday and the patient was recovering well.
“The first human received an implant from Neuralink yesterday and is recovering well,” Musk said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
“Initial results show promising neuron spike detection,” he added.
The neurotechnology company, co-founded by Musk in 2016, aims to build direct communication channels between the brain and computers to supercharge human capabilities, treat neurological disorders like Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or Parkinson’s, and achieve a symbiotic relationship between humans and artificial intelligence.
Neuralink has been working toward using implants to connect the human brain to a computer for half a decade, but the company faced scrutiny after a monkey died in 2022 during an attempt to get the animal to play Pong, one of the first video games.
