Tanzania has officially inaugurated its first Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) train service, commonly referred to as the “Mchongoko” train, on November 1, 2024.
The train embarked on its maiden journey from Magufuli Station in Dar Es Salaam to the main station in Dodoma, marking a significant advancement in the country’s transportation infrastructure.
The Mchongoko train features a unique design with a cab at both the front and back, differentiating it from previous train models that typically have a single driving cab. It is composed of eight interconnected carriages that are non-detachable, enhancing its operational efficiency compared to conventional trains that can be split into sections. This modern train has the capacity to accommodate up to 589 passengers and operates at a maximum speed of 160 kilometers per hour.
Masanja Kadogosa, the Director General of the Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC), highlighted that the Mchongoko service is designed as an “express” route, meaning it will not make intermediate stops, thereby expediting travel times for passengers in a hurry. This service is expected to reduce travel time by approximately 45 minutes compared to existing train options.
With the launch of the Mchongoko train, the TRC aims to increase passenger transport capacity, as current operations see between 9,000 and 10,000 travelers journeying from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma daily.
