Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan held talks with Pope Francis at the Vatican on Monday, with the two deliberating on social, regional and international issues and peace promotion.
In their 25 minutes of discussion, the leaders also agreed on strengthening diplomatic relations between Tanzania and the Vatican. President Samia showed to be satisfied with the contribution of the Catholic church in promoting Tanzania’s welfare, development especially in the areas of education, health and social welfare.
President Samia flew to the Vatican City on Monday following a direct invitation from the Pope being accompanied by various leaders including a representative from Tanzania’s Catholic Church associations and missions, including youth, men, and women wings.
Diplomatic relations between Tanzania and the Vatican were established on April 19, 1968 by Archbishop Pierluigi Sartorelli who was appointed as the first Vatican’s Ambassador to Tanzania.
According to statistics from the Vatican News, the Catholic church in Tanzania owns and operates 240 nursery schools, 147 primary schools, 244 secondary schools, technical colleges, five universities; five education institutions and two university centers that are under the University of Saint Augustine, SAUT where all the colleges have a total of 31,000 students.
Catholic owns 473 health institutions and many other projects all rendering both physical and spiritual services to people.
