President Samia Suluhu Hassan has begun her week long visit to the Republic of Korea following an invitation from President Yoon Suk Yeol.where she is expected to witness the signing of seven major agreements, including one that will see Tanzania receive a $2.5 billion (about Sh6.5 trillion) soft loan from the Export and Import (Exim) Bank of Korea.
During her trip, President Samia will participate in the Africa-Korea Summit and conduct an official state visit to South Korea.

Yesterday, Tanzania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, January Makamba, disclosed that seven agreements will be ratified, including a political declaration to initiate talks on economic cooperation.
Makamba elaborated, “Throughout this visit, the President will engage in discussions with her counterpart at the Korean presidential palace and endorse seven cooperation agreements spanning diverse sectors such as mining, aviation, education, and the blue economy. Of particular significance is the commencement of negotiations for the economic cooperation agreement.”
President Samia is also slated to take part in the Africa-Korea Summit, where she will participate in panel discussions and hold discussions with prominent companies like Samsung and Hyundai, along with other institutions in Korea.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan will also receive another honorary doctorate in aviation management from Korea Aerospace University (KAU) during her visit to South Korea. This will be her fifth honorary degree since she came to power on March 19, 2021.
The degree will be awarded in honor of her transformative actions, policy interventions, and pragmatic leadership that have transformed the aviation sector.
These include the development of airport infrastructure, investment in capacity building for systems, technical personnel, and supporting staff, and the expansion of fleets both for passenger and cargo planes, which have increased from one in 2015 to fourteen now.
President Hassan’s honorary PhDs:
🎓 University of Dar es Salaam on November 30, 2022, in recognition of her contributions to building Tanzania’s economy and democracy, bridging the gender gap, and improving access to education.
🎓 In October 2023, President Hassan received her second honorary PhD from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) of India.
🎓 December of the same year, she was conferred with an Honorary PhD in Tourism Management and Marketing by the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) for her contributions to promoting tourism and economic development in the country.
🎓 April 2024, Ankara University awarded President Hassan the degree honoris causa on the second day of her five-day state visit to Türkiye.
🎓 May 2024: Honorary doctorate in aviation management from Korea Aerospace University (KAU) during her visit to South Korea
Trade relations between Tanzania and South Korea have flourished in recent times, particularly with the backing of the Exim Bank of Korea for various initiatives. Noteworthy ventures include the issuance of national IDs and the construction of the 670-meter Tanzanite Bridge by Korean construction company GS E&C, valued at TZS 243 billion.
South Korea is also expected to provide support for establishing Tanzania’s inaugural Digital Training Institute, aimed at nurturing skilled individuals in the tech sector.
