The National Environment Management Council (NEMC) is ramping up its efforts to enforce environmental laws and regulations to combat pollution and promote sustainable development nationwide.
The Acting Central Zonal Manager of NEMC, Novatus Mushi, annoucneed that the council had so far registered 105 development projects and issued 30 environmental certificates between July and December 2024.
“Our goal is to create a culture of responsibility where industries and individuals recognize the impact of their activities on the environment. We are dedicated to enforcing regulations to safeguard our natural resources,” Mushi stated.
Established in 2018, the Central Zone office is responsible for ensuring environmental compliance in Dodoma, Singida, and Iringa. In the past six months, it has reviewed 51 projects, including office buildings, hospitals, dry ports, and energy initiatives, promoting sustainable economic growth.
NEMC has also been monitoring significant strategic projects like Tanzania’s Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), the Dodoma ring road, and Msalato International Airport. Additionally, it has resolved 24 environmental complaints, with 58% related to noise pollution from entertainment venues, industries, and places of worship.
Mushi, emphasized NEMC’s collaboration with local governments and stakeholders to enhance monitoring and compliance.
“Working together with municipal authorities and environmental officers has allowed us to effectively identify and address violations. This partnership is essential for achieving long-term environmental sustainability,” he remarked.
Beyond enforcement, the council is conducting community sensitization programs to educate the public on proper waste disposal and conservation practices.
“Public participation is vital for environmental conservation. We are organizing workshops and outreach programs to ensure citizens understand their role in protecting the environment,” he said.
“We call on all stakeholders to unite in preserving our environment for future generations. Compliance is not just a legal obligation; it is a moral duty,”he added.
