The Tanzania Plant Health and Pesticide Authority (TPHPA), serving as the National Plant Protection Organization of the United Republic of Tanzania, has issued a crucial announcement regarding the importation of soybeans from Malawi. Following a comprehensive Pest Risk Analysis aimed at updating phytosanitary import requirements for soybeans from Malawi.
According to the Director General Prof. Joseph C. Ndunguru ,who announced this through a Press Release, it has been observed that the presence of the Tobacco Ringspot Virus (TRSV) in Malawi poses a significant risk to the production of soybeans in Tanzania.
The Tobacco Ringspot Virus is a highly contagious plant disease that poses a considerable threat to soybean crops, potentially leading to substantial damage, yield reduction, and economic losses ranging from 25% to 100% for farmers. In response to this imminent threat, TPHPA has deemed it necessary to suspend all imports of soybeans and its products immediately. This measure is essential to safeguard the rapidly growing subsector and prevent the potential introduction and spread of the virus in Tanzania.
Following the Plant Health Act, TPHPA has decided to enforce an immediate import ban on soybeans and its products, including those in transit, originating from Malawi, until further notice. Importers, traders, and relevant stakeholders are urged to adhere to this prohibition without delay. Additionally, TPHPA encourages all importers to explore alternative sources for soybeans.
This decisive action reflects TPHPA’s commitment to protecting the interests of Tanzanian farmers and ensuring the integrity of the agricultural sector. Stay tuned for further updates as this situation develops.
