Tanzania has successfully acquired 60 hectares of land in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for the development of dry ports, a strategic move aimed at enhancing trade and increasing the volume of goods passing through the Port of Dar Es Salaam.
This development comes amid a significant surge in cargo from the DRC, which handled 3.4 million tonnes of cargo at Dar Es Salaam Port last year, positioning the DRC as the leading user of Tanzanian ports for transit goods.
The acquisition was formalized during a meeting where DRC’s Minister of Transport, Marc Ekila Likombo, handed over the documents to Tanzania’s Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport, Prof. Godius Kahyarara. This initiative aligns with Tanzania’s broader strategy to strengthen economic ties and improve logistical connections with neighboring countries
The establishment of these dry ports is expected to streamline the handling of transit cargo, reduce congestion at Dar Es Salaam Port, and expedite the movement of goods to and from the DRC. This move is part of a larger master plan by the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) to enhance port infrastructure and efficiency. The dry ports will facilitate quicker clearance and shipment processes, benefiting traders and improving the overall trade efficiency between the two countries

In addition to the new dry ports, plans are underway to rehabilitate and expand existing transport infrastructure linking Tanzania and the DRC. This includes the development of road and rail networks to enhance connectivity and support the anticipated increase in trade volumes. Specifically, a 1,000-kilometer road from Lubumbashi to Kalemie in the DRC and the refurbishment of the railway and port infrastructure in Kalemie are key components of this project
The Tanzanian government, through the TPA, is also exploring additional inland container depots (ICDs) and upgrading current facilities to handle larger volumes of cargo. These efforts are part of Tanzania’s comprehensive approach to position itself as a central hub for trade in the East African region, competing with other major ports along the Indian Ocean coast
The acquisition of land for dry ports in the DRC marks a significant milestone in Tanzania’s efforts to boost regional trade, improve logistics, and strengthen economic relations with its neighbors. This development is expected to bring substantial economic benefits and facilitate smoother and more efficient cargo handling between Tanzania and the DRC.
