President Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Guinea Equatorial has appointed Zenon Avomo as the new Director General of the National Financial Intelligence Agency (ANIF).
This development follows the removal of Baltasar Engonga, the former director, after a corruption scandal involving illicit behavior and the leaking of videos recorded in his office.
The scandal erupted when over 400 videos surfaced, revealing inappropriate interactions between Engonga, his family members, and high-ranking government officials, including ministers and police officers. These recordings raised significant concerns within the government, prompting an urgent investigation and disciplinary actions against those involved. The scandal has underscored the need for greater vigilance and transparency in managing public office in the country.
Avomo, a legal and financial expert with extensive experience in public administration, takes the reins at ANIF in the midst of these reforms. He holds degrees in law and finance from the National University of Equatorial Guinea and has served in various high-profile roles, including as a judge in Malabo’s Court, Director General of Contracts and Government Markets at the Ministry of Finance, and Secretary General of both the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Mining, Industry, and Energy.
As the new Director General, Avomo’s appointment reflects the government’s strong commitment to addressing corruption and strengthening the management of public finances. His extensive background in law and finance equips him to lead ANIF’s efforts in monitoring financial transactions, ensuring compliance with anti-corruption measures, and tackling illicit financial activities.
