The Tanzania Forestry Research Institute (TAFORI) has called on individuals to invest in forestry and beekeeping, emphasizing the importance of adopting research-based practices to maximize the benefits of the country’s rich forest resources.
Dr. Chelestino Balama, Director of Forest Utilization Research at TAFORI, extended this invitation while addressing a group of forestry and beekeeping artisans and journalists during a recent visit to TAFORI’s offices. The visit was part of a learning tour aimed at showcasing ongoing research projects.
Dr. Balama underscored that investments in the forestry sector can significantly enhance incomes while contributing to biodiversity conservation, thereby supporting sustainable development goals. He highlighted that TAFORI’s research efforts are directed towards improving community livelihoods and boosting the national economy through various innovative projects. One notable project involves extensive tree planting activities across different regions, providing crucial data on the most suitable tree species for each specific area. This initiative has seen increased participation from youth, helping to reduce their reliance on traditional forms of employment.
TAFORI’s Forest Utilization and Operations Research Directorate is actively involved in several key projects designed to improve the processing and utilization of both timber and non-timber forest products (NTFPs). This directorate includes several specialized sections: Wood Structure, Timber Engineering, Forest Operations, Wood Energy, Wood Chemistry, and Forest Products Development and Marketing

The directorate’s research activities focus on a range of areas, including:
– Determining the anatomical, physical, and mechanical properties of lesser-utilized tree species.
– Developing technologies for wood recycling and biomass energy production.
– Conducting environmental impact assessments to mitigate the adverse effects of timber harvesting.
– Studying marketing potentials for various forest products, including medicinal plants, fruits, mushrooms, and wild vegetables
Dr. Balama pointed out that these research initiatives are crucial for optimizing productivity while minimizing environmental degradation. He stressed that TAFORI’s efforts to educate and involve local communities, particularly the youth, in sustainable forestry practices are essential for achieving long-term ecological and economic benefits.
TAFORI also emphasizes the need for adhering to environmental and social considerations in all forestry operations. This includes revising current road design guidelines to minimize construction and maintenance costs, improving working conditions for forest operations staff, and adopting sustainable harvesting practices to reduce environmental impact. The ultimate goal is to ensure that forestry operations are conducted in a manner that is both economically viable and environmentally responsible
The directorate’s research supports various stakeholders, including individual investors, by providing data and guidelines that ensure profitable and sustainable forestry and beekeeping ventures. Dr. Balama urged more individuals to engage in these sectors, as they offer viable income opportunities while contributing to the country’s overall sustainable development goals.
