The Deputy Chairman of the Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA) for Mainland Tanzania, Tundu Lissu, who is also vying for the party’s national chairmanship, has called on the current Chairman, Freeman Mbowe, to provide clarity regarding allegations of spending billions of party funds.
Speaking on the social media platform Clubhouse, Lissu acknowledged Mbowe’s significant contributions to the party, including financial support through loans that facilitated various party activities. However, he emphasized the importance of transparency and proper documentation for all expenditures.
“It is true that our Chairman Mbowe has greatly supported the party. He loaned us funds, which we repaid using party subsidies. Even the helicopters that the party agreed to use were fully paid for,” Lissu stated.
Nevertheless, Lissu expressed that he lacks detailed information about the alleged billions spent, noting that only approved and known expenses were covered.

“I am now hearing about billions being spent, but I don’t know what they are for. As far as I know, the expenses were paid in line with what we had agreed upon as a party,” he clarified.
He stressed that no party funds should be used without proper documentation. “If someone has invested billions in the party, they should present the documents for those funds. No funds can be used without documentation,” Lissu emphasized.
Lissu also noted that beyond Mbowe, many other party members have made significant contributions and investments in the party. He reiterated that all loans taken by the party have been transparently repaid as per the party’s agreements.
“Even some of us have invested in this party. Many people have served the party with dedication, but all borrowed funds have been repaid,” he added.
Lissu’s remarks underscore the importance of leadership accountability in maintaining trust among party members and the public. He emphasized that transparency in financial management is critical for the party’s success, which should be built on the principles of integrity and honesty.
This stance not only aims to strengthen unity within the party but also sets an example of the type of leadership necessary for building a strong democracy in the country.
