The Deputy Chairman of CHADEMA and a candidate for the party’s leadership, Tundu Lissu, has recently shared serious concerns about the upcoming elections within the party.
Speaking on his X (formerly Twitter) page, Lissu expressed his worry that the challenges faced in local elections might escalate as the stakes grow higher in the party’s top positions, where there is not only internal competition but also external influence. He highlighted that large sums of money being used in CHADEMA’s internal elections aren’t even coming from the party members themselves.
Lissu explained, “We’ve seen what happens in local elections, but the pressure in higher-level elections is much more intense. There are bigger financial interests at play, and it’s not just internal – there are outside forces involved too.”
Additionally, Lissu shared unsettling information about a supposed plot targeting CHADEMA’s Chairman, Freeman Mbowe. He claims that unknown individuals are conspiring to harm him and then frame Mbowe for the act. He denied rumors suggesting he was planning to leave the party, stating, “There’s talk that I’m leaving the party, but let me be clear: that’s just not true. Who do they think I’d leave my post for?”

Lissu also defended his role in the party, pushing back against those who find it surprising that he’s taken on the deputy chairman position. He commented, “They wonder why I took the deputy chair. Who else did they expect me to choose?”
These remarks reflect the increasing tension within the opposition party as it prepares for the 2024 elections. There are growing concerns over the handling of election funds and the transparency of leadership elections. As internal and external pressures mount, Lissu’s comments have sparked further debate on whether these power struggles will affect the party’s future.
While Lissu’s accusations about a plot remain unconfirmed, the seriousness of the situation is undeniable.
