President Samia Suluhu Hassan has tasked the Ministry of Energy to identify talented Tanzanians in technology and assign them the responsibility of implementing a system that allows cooking gas users to pay for their usage on a pay-as-you-go basis, akin to the functionality of electricity meters (LUKU).
Speaking during the unveiling of the 2024 National Clean Cooking Energy Strategy in Dar Es Salaam President Samia ,emphasized the government’s duty to raise awareness about clean cooking energy among citizens and to develop effective policies to accomplish the strategy’s objectives. She stated, “Our Ministry of Energy colleagues will guide us to ensure that clean cooking energy is accessible to citizens at affordable rates.”

“We expect the private sector, in addition to increasing investment and increasing the availability of clean cooking energy in various parts of the country, to also bring us simple technology that will enable citizens to access clean energy according to their ability, for example, paying as they use, similar to electricity and water, those prepaid meters.”
“And here, I want to say, Minister, that one of the environmental exhibitions I have visited, I found this technology where Tanzanians have produced gas cylinders that you use as you pay. If you pay ten thousand, you will use your gas worth ten thousand.
Once it’s finished, you cut off even if there’s gas remaining, then you contact them again to pay and be reconnected. I really urge them to look for, or if they exist, to come forward so that we can work with them in this area.” – President Samia Said
Over 33,000 Tanzanians die annually from using firewood for cooking. Climate change, deforestation, and loss of biodiversity are other effects of the burning of firewood. The government aims at undertaking measures focused on connecting 80 percent of Tanzanians to clean energy for cooking by 2033.
