Upon returning from a transformative learning experience in Korea focused on film studies, Tanzanian actress Wema Sepetu has voiced profound insights into the state of the Tanzanian film industry. Reflecting on her time in Korea, where she witnessed firsthand the advancements and innovations shaping the Korean film industry, Sepetu emphasized the need for Tanzanian filmmakers, producers, and scriptwriters to undergo further education to enhance their skills.
“The Korean film industry has achieved remarkable success through significant investments and continuous learning,” Sepetu stated, highlighting the vast difference in resources and knowledge between the two countries’ film sectors. “To elevate our own industry, we must prioritize education and equip ourselves with the necessary knowledge and tools that can bring authenticity and excellence to Tanzanian films.”

Sepetu lamented the current lack of realism in many Tanzanian films, attributing this shortfall to the limited access to knowledge and resources essential for producing high-quality cinema. She called upon stakeholders in the Tanzanian film industry to embrace a culture of continuous learning and innovation, stressing that this approach is crucial for competing on a global scale.
“We have immense talent in Tanzania, but talent alone is not enough. We need structured education and support systems to nurture our filmmakers and enhance the quality of our productions,” Sepetu emphasized.
Her remarks have sparked discussions within the industry about the importance of educational reforms and increased investment in film infrastructure. Many have echoed Sepetu’s sentiments, acknowledging the urgent need for comprehensive reforms to revitalize the Tanzanian film industry and position it as a formidable player in the global arena.
