Regional authorities in Mwanza have detained a 65-year-old man, Atanas Michael Masubo, on allegations of sexually assaulting and threatening a 68-year-old neighbor.
The incident reportedly took place on November 7, 2024, in Masubo’s home in the Kashishi area of Nyamhongolo ward, Ilemela district.
Police commander for Mwanza region, Wilbroad Mutafungwa, shared details of the ongoing investigation. According to preliminary reports, the victim, a neighbor of Masubo, visited his home and found him drinking a locally popular alcoholic beverage, Konyagi. Upon arriving, she was invited to join him, and the two continued drinking together.
As the evening progressed, Masubo allegedly instructed his domestic help to purchase more alcohol from a nearby store. Once alone, the suspect reportedly threatened the woman with a panga (machete), warning her to comply or risk her life. Taking advantage of the situation, he is alleged to have then assaulted her, subjecting her to both physical and sexual violence.
After the incident, the woman managed to escape and reported the ordeal to police authorities, who promptly began an investigation. Following their inquiries, police apprehended Masubo for questioning and further investigation.
Commander Mutafungwa emphasized that law enforcement is taking this case seriously and reiterated that such violations are treated with utmost urgency.

He expressed concern about the spread of the story on social media, cautioning journalists and citizens alike to exercise care in sharing sensitive details of cases under investigation. He noted that revealing or distorting information in cases involving alleged abuse could harm the victims or jeopardize ongoing investigations.
The authorities have not yet announced the suspect’s legal proceedings, as investigations are ongoing. Police encourage anyone with further information about the incident to come forward, noting that the protection of vulnerable citizens remains a top priority.
