The death toll for the Mbeya region road accident which occured on Wednesday,has increased from 13 to 16.
The two were among the 22 injured who had been receiving treatment at Mbeya Regional Referral Hospital.
Peter Seme, Chief Nurse at the hospital, confirmed the latest deaths, noting that the victims include 13 men and three women. He added that three of the injured are still undergoing treatment, while the others have been discharged after receiving medical care.
The accident, which occurred along the Simike slope, involved a tragic collision between three cars, a three-wheeler, motorcycles, and a truck. The incident was triggered when the truck’s brakes failed, causing it to crash into the other vehicles.
Thirteen people died on the spot, and 18 others were wounded, necessitating immediate medical attention at Mbeya Regional Hospital. Of the injured, eight were reported to be in critical condition.

Police Commander SACP Benjamini Kuzaga confirmed the incident and provided details on the sequence of events. He attributed the cause to the truck driver’s inability to control the vehicle after a brake failure. The driver is currently in police custody pending further investigation.
