Sharifa Suleiman has emerged victorious in the race for Bawacha Chairperson, securing the position for the next five years after a tightly contested election held earlier this week.

The results were announced in the early hours of Saturday, January 18, 2025, at Ubungo Plaza Hall in Dar es Salaam.

In the second round of voting, Suleiman triumphed with 222 votes, defeating her opponent, Celestine Simba, who earned 139 votes. The need for a second round arose after no candidate received more than half the votes in the first round. Suleiman had initially garnered 167 votes, while Simba received 116, and Suzan Kiwanga secured 100 votes, leaving the race open for a decisive rerun.

Suleiman has served as the acting chairperson of Bawacha since 2020, after the removal of former chairperson Halima Mdee and 18 other members. Her leadership has been marked by a commitment to rebuilding the organization, and her election as chairperson solidifies her role at the forefront of Bawacha for the next five years.
