South Africa’s Speaker of Parliament Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has resigned after police raided her home during a corruption investigation.

Mapisa-Nqakula is accused of soliciting bribes in return for awarding contracts during her time as defence minister.

She has denied the charges and said her resignation was “in no way an indication or admission of guilt”.

She said given the “seriousness” of the probe she couldn’t continue her role.

She became speaker in 2021. Before that, she served as defence minister for seven years.

Last week Ms Mapisa-Nqakula’s lawyers filed a request for a court order to prevent her arrest, saying it would infringe on her dignity.

Judges rejected her bid on the basis that the matter was not urgent and they could not speculate on an arrest that was yet to happen.

Mapisa-Nqakula, arrives at the Lyttelton police station in Centurion where is expected to hand herself over following allegations that she received bribes from Umkhombe Marine chief executive, Nombasa Ntsondwa-Ndhlovu.

Umkhombe Marine was awarded contracts worth more than R200-million when Mapisa-Nwamus was the minister of defence.

“I am resigning to uphold the integrity of our Parliament and the trust of the people of South Africa. This decision is not an admission of guilt to the allegations against me,” she stated. Her resignation came after the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria rejected her urgent appeal to halt potential arrest by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and the South African Police Service for corruption charges.

The 67-year-old anti-apartheid veteran, who served as defence minister for seven years before becoming speaker in 2021, faced a court bid to prevent her arrest last week. Her request was denied by judges on Tuesday, citing lack of urgency. Allegations claim she demanded $120,000 to secure a transportation tender for army equipment. The resignation, amidst corruption accusations, precedes the upcoming general election, expected to pose challenges for the ruling African National Congress (ANC) known for facing corruption and mismanagement allegations.
