It has been stated that the Rusumo hydropower project has started generating 80 megawatts of electricity, which is evenly divided as 26.6 megawatts for Tanzania, Rwanda, and Burundi, thereby further strengthening the national electricity grids.
The Vice Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals, Hon. Kilumbe Ng’enda, made these remarks during a visit to the project located in Ngara District, Kagera Region.
He stated that the project, implemented by RPCL, a company owned by the three countries, is a demonstration of the Tanzanian government’s commitment to ensuring that the country has sufficient and reliable electricity for development and social activities.
Furthermore, Hon. Ng’enda urged the project implementers to continue working efficiently and ensure that the use of funds aligns with the progress of the project, emphasizing the importance of reporting on the implementation of community projects (CSR).

The committee expressed its satisfaction with the project’s success and the progress made in joint operation, which will also help strengthen the good relations between the three countries.
Additionally, the committee praised the cooperation between the governments of Tanzania, Burundi, and Rwanda in promoting economic development and maintaining peace, brotherhood, and friendship among the three nations.
On his part, the Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy responsible for Electricity and Renewable Energy, Dr. Khatibu Kazungu, thanked the committee members for their monitoring and inspection of the project, which has broad benefits for the entire nation.
He further promised that the Ministry of Energy would continue to address the recommendations from the committee members in order to improve the efficiency of the Energy Sector.
