The fight against cancer in Tanzania is facing serious setbacks due to high research costs, delayed diagnoses, and inefficiencies in the healthcare system.

Experts warn that these obstacles are making it harder for patients to get the treatment they need in time, often with devastating consequences.

A new study, conducted by the Economic and Social Research Foundation (ESRF) in partnership with leading medical research institutions in Kenya, India, and the United Kingdom, has uncovered a troubling pattern. Many cancer patients seek medical help while their illness is still in its early stages, but misdiagnosis by healthcare professionals leads to crucial delays in treatment.

The research highlights that cervical, liver, and breast cancer patients are frequently misdiagnosed with more common ailments such as urinary tract infections, stomach problems, or simple fevers. This means they often receive the wrong treatment, wasting valuable time until the cancer reaches an advanced stage, making it much harder—and more expensive—to treat.

The findings were presented on February 20, 2025, during the launch of the book Cancer Care in Pandemic Times. Speaking at the event, ESRF Executive Director, Prof. Fortunate Makene, painted a grim picture of the challenges faced by cancer patients.

“The findings in this book illuminate a painful reality,” she said. “Patients face significant obstacles at every step. The delays in diagnosis force them into a race against time, where the odds are rarely in their favor.”

The study stresses the urgent need to improve early cancer detection in Tanzania. Experts are calling for better training for medical professionals, increased investment in research, and stronger public awareness campaigns to help people recognize early warning signs and seek specialized medical care.

Another major concern raised in the study is the financial burden that cancer places on families. Many patients, desperate for answers, go from one hospital to another, draining their savings in search of a correct diagnosis. By the time they receive proper treatment, the disease is often at an advanced stage, requiring costly procedures that are out of reach for most Tanzanians.

Health experts and policymakers are now being urged to address these challenges by strengthening the country’s healthcare system. Key recommendations include improving cancer screening programs, ensuring doctors receive better training in cancer detection, and allocating more funds to research and treatment.

With cancer cases on the rise in Tanzania, experts warn that urgent action is needed to prevent more unnecessary deaths. The study’s authors stress that without major reforms, thousands of lives will continue to be lost—not because treatment isn’t available, but because it comes too late.
