Tanzania has unveiled a plan to join the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM), presenting lucrative air transportation opportunities for the country to boost its income.
Mr. Hamza Johari, the Director General of the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA), announced the country’s plan during an awareness workshop in Dar Es Salaam. He highlighted that discussions among various stakeholders are ongoing to explore the potential benefits and necessary regulations before formalizing Tanzania’s participation.
“We deliberately stayed out of this business to encourage and strengthen investments in our airlines. Now, we believe it is the right time,” Mr. Johari stated.
A three-day sensitization meeting was convened to address two key issues: Tanzania’s potential entry into the single air transport market and the revision and implementation of new aviation regulations. This move would enable Tanzanian airlines to operate passenger and cargo services across Africa without constraints.
Mr. Juma Fimbo, a trainer from the National Institute of Transport (NIT), emphasized that this step would enhance revenue generation for Tanzanian airlines by granting them unrestricted access to numerous airports across the continent.
Currently, Tanzanian airlines like ATCL can transport passengers and cargo to Kenya under existing agreements, but face limitations in carrying cargo from Kenya to Uganda due to bilateral agreements between the two countries, as explained by Mr. Fimbo.
The SAATM, an African Union initiative, aims to establish a unified air transport market in Africa, promoting significant freedom in air travel across the continent.
To date, 34 countries, including Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Egypt, Ethiopia, and others, have signed up for the SAATM, showcasing a commitment to fostering enhanced air connectivity and economic growth within Africa.
