A rebel coalition operating in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has declared its readiness to negotiate with the government in an effort to end the ongoing conflict.
The Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC), which includes the M23 rebel group, says it is committed to finding a peaceful resolution through dialogue.
In a message shared on social media, AFC spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka confirmed that the group is prepared to engage in talks aimed at implementing recent agreements reached by regional bodies. These include resolutions from a joint summit of the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), as well as decisions made by the African Union’s Peace and Security Council.
“These resolutions call for an immediate ceasefire and political dialogue between the government and AFC/M23,” Kanyuka stated. “We hope the government will respect and fully implement these commitments.”
Despite this call for negotiations, tensions remain high. Reports from conflict zones suggest that government forces and allied militia groups continue to launch military operations in the eastern region. The AFC has accused the army of carrying out air and ground attacks in areas such as Uvira and Minembwe in South Kivu province, with civilians reportedly caught in the crossfire.

Meanwhile, leaders from across the region are working to find a solution. A high-level summit hosted in Tanzania brought together representatives from EAC and SADC countries to discuss the crisis and explore potential actions to restore peace. The meeting emphasized the urgent need for stability in the region, as the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate.
In recent weeks, M23 rebels have seized control of key cities, including Goma and Bukavu, further intensifying the crisis. The rebel advances have drawn international concern, with calls for an immediate ceasefire and meaningful negotiations between the warring parties.
With the situation evolving rapidly, all eyes are on whether both sides will honor their commitments and engage in genuine efforts to end the violence. The success of any peace process will largely depend on mutual trust, sustained diplomatic efforts, and a willingness to prioritize the lives of millions affected by the conflict.
