This assurance was given by Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema during the SADC Organ Troika Summit held on August 16, 2024, in Harare, Zimbabwe.
President Hichilema, addressing the summit virtually, conveyed his confidence in Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, noting her proven leadership capabilities in previous regional roles. He emphasized that Tanzania is well-positioned to advance the goals of the SADC Organ, particularly in enhancing regional security and cooperation.
The summit, which also included Namibian President Nangolo Mbumba, who has just completed his term as Chair of the Organ, centered on reviewing and addressing key security issues within the region. Among the top concerns were the ongoing conflicts in Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province, and the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. The leaders engaged in comprehensive discussions aimed at formulating strategies to mitigate these challenges and strengthen regional stability.

President Hichilema also took the opportunity to extend his gratitude to Namibia for its leadership under both former President Hage Geingob and the current President Mbumba. He praised their contributions to the SADC Organ and acknowledged the diligent work of the SADC Secretariat, led by Elias Magosi, in organizing the summit and facilitating discussions.
The formal transition of the chairmanship to Tanzania will take place during the 44th Ordinary Meeting of Heads of State and Government on August 17, 2024, in Harare. With this new responsibility, Tanzania is expected to continue promoting unity and collaboration among SADC member states, focusing on peace, security, and economic growth across the region.
