The Transport and Infrastructure Committee of the National Assembly has voiced concerns regarding the escalating number of road damages across the nation attributable to ongoing floods.
Under the leadership of committee chair George Kariuki, who also serves as the MP for Ndia Constituency, the committee has called upon leaders and residents to address this pressing issue, warning that it could soon lead to transportation paralysis nationwide.
“Most of our roads have been damaged also bridges and culverts. We are not seeing leaders addressing this in their areas,” he said.
Kariuki emphasized the widespread damage to roads, bridges, and culverts, lamenting the lack of attention from leaders in affected areas. He urged swift action to mitigate the situation before it exacerbates further.

Expressing optimism, Kariuki affirmed his confidence in the national government’s willingness to intervene once the rains recede.
The torrential rains have wreaked havoc on infrastructure, causing extensive damage to bridges and drainage tunnels, resulting in flooding in numerous regions.
On April 30, a segment of the Embu-Meru highway was shut down following the detection of cracks. Subsidence of soil beneath a crucial bridge led to the formation of a fissure, prompting authorities to close the road and divert traffic.
Tragically, the ongoing floods have claimed numerous lives, with casualties reaching 228 as of the latest count on Sunday. Additionally, 42,526 households have been displaced, underscoring the urgent need for coordinated efforts to address the devastating impacts of the floods on communities across the nation.
