The global advocacy organization Uniting to Combat Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) has appointed Dr. Winnie Mpanju-Shumbusho, a Tanzanian, as its new Board Chairperson.
Dr. Shumbusho expressed her honor at being appointed as the chair of Uniting to Combat NTDs, emphasizing her belief in the potential to positively impact over one billion individuals affected by preventable and treatable diseases, many of which are prevalent in Africa. She looks forward to collaborating with the team to drive change and realize a world where NTDs no longer threaten lives.
With over two decades of experience in global health systems, Dr. Shumbusho previously served as the World Health Organization (WHO) Assistant Director-General for HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, Malaria, and NTDs until her retirement in 2016. During her tenure, she made significant contributions to the organization’s efforts in disease prevention, control, impact mitigation, country support, inter-country collaboration, and global partnerships.
Born in Maruku village, Kagera Region, Dr. Shumbusho has been instrumental in mobilizing political commitment, resources, and actions to combat HIV/AIDS, TB, Malaria, NTDs, and in building resilient health systems, including contributions to the founding, governance, and efficacy of the Global Fund.
Thoko Elphick-Pooley, Executive Director of Uniting to Combat NTDs, expressed delight at Dr. Winnie Mpanju-Shumbusho’s appointment as the new Board Chair, highlighting her esteemed reputation in global health leadership. Dr. Shumbusho’s experience will be crucial as the organization works towards its mission to eradicate NTDs by 2030 and explores new partnerships and sustainable financing opportunities to reach all those affected by NTDs.
In addition to her new role, Dr. Winnie Mpanju-Shumbusho serves as the Co-Chair of the Lancet Commission on Malaria Eradication, a member of the Panel for a Global Public Health Convention, and a Board member of the University of California in San Francisco Institute for Global Health Sciences, MEI.
Dr. Shumbusho succeeds Rebeca Grynspan, who held the position until July 2023 and remains an Ambassador for Uniting to Combat NTDs.
