The Vice President, Dr. Philip Mpango, has instructed the Ministry of Home Affairs to expedite the process of using camera-equipped jackets for traffic police officers to curb corruption, which partly contributes to road accidents.
Dr. Mpango made these remarks in Dodoma while inaugurating the new ‘A’ grade police station for Mtumba police district and the distribution of 21 vehicles.
He stated that the ministry should speed up the process of implementing the use of these jackets to help reduce corruption among the police, which has been a significant cause of accidents in the country.

“I was discussing with Minister (Engineer Hamad) Masauni, who informed me that they are in the process of introducing camera-equipped jackets for traffic police officers, which will be able to capture everything and record all conversations to be heard at the traffic headquarters.
“Therefore, I urge the Minister of Home Affairs to expedite this plan to start working and eliminate the problem of corruption among our traffic police officers,” said Dr. Mpango.
Furthermore, he urged the Tanzanian Police Force to strengthen its use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), including the use of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras to combat crime and road accidents.
He also called for increased use of robots and smart sensors, as well as regular training for the police to keep up with technological advancements.
Due to the increase in road accidents, the Police Force should review the driver’s license issuance system and enhance vehicle inspections while increasing the use of security cameras.
Minister Masauni said the inaugurated station is one of the government-built stations to bring services closer to the citizens.
“This modern ‘A’ grade station was constructed with government funds, and the 21 vehicles distributed today will be deployed in Police Districts nationwide, especially in regions with conflicts between farmers and herders,” said Masauni.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Camillus Wambura stated that the station was built by local experts using the Force Account system, costing 977 million Tanzanian Shillings, and will serve residents of eight surrounding districts of Mtumba government city.”
