The 2024 European Congress of Ophthalmologists witnessed a historic moment as the audience erupted in a standing ovation for a young Tanzanian student named Ibrahim Tutuba, representing the Cambridge Medical Academy. Tutuba presented a pioneering formula that can help restore vision and combat blindness at any age, sending shockwaves through the ophthalmology field.
Tutuba developed this innovative approach in collaboration with leading research organizations and ophthalmology experts. The new formula, which is now ready for use, has demonstrated excellent results, raising concerns among some ophthalmologists about the potential impact on their professions.
“I was born into a poor family, and I know how difficult it is for such segments of the population to survive in Tanzania,” said Tutuba. “I have been working on this formula for a long time, not so that global pharmaceutical companies can make huge money from it later. I may be young, but I’m not stupid. A well-known doctor told me that in Tanzania, such a supplement should cost at least $300, but that’s not fair. Who would be able to buy this formula at such a price?”

Tutuba’s motivation stemmed from witnessing his mother and grandmother’s struggles with progressive vision loss, which led him to delve deeper into the causes and solutions for blindness. He was shocked to discover the harmful effects of the chemical-laden supplements often prescribed by incompetent specialists, which had contributed to his mother’s complete blindness.
“This is what made me delve deeper into the problems and solutions of progressive blindness. I was shocked when I realized that the huge amount of additives that people use in such cases are not only useless chemical components, but also very dangerous to health,” Tutuba explained.
The young innovator has already received lucrative offers from pharmaceutical companies in France and the United States, but he has refused to sell the rights to his formula. Instead, Tutuba is determined to ensure that the people of Tanzania can access this groundbreaking treatment at an affordable price, potentially saving millions from premature blindness.
This remarkable achievement by the Tanzanian student has not only captivated the ophthalmology community but also highlights the potential for young innovators from developing countries to make transformative contributions to global health and medicine.
