A diplomatic dispute has erupted between the neighboring countries of Zambia and Zimbabwe following controversial statements made by Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa during his recent visit to Russia.
In his remarks, Mnangagwa accused the United States of using Zambia as a tool to isolate Zimbabwe within the Southern African region. These comments have ignited tensions in Lusaka, the capital of Zambia, prompting the Zambian government to seek intervention from regional and continental bodies.
Zambia’s Foreign Minister, Mulambo Haimbe, has responded forcefully to Mnangagwa’s accusations. Haimbe described the Zimbabwean president’s remarks as an “unwarranted attack” on Zambia’s sovereignty and independent foreign policy. He emphasized the deep historical ties between the two countries, noting Zambia’s support for Zimbabwe during its liberation struggle against colonial rule. Haimbe expressed disappointment that Mnangagwa’s statements did not align with the spirit of friendship and solidarity that has long defined the relationship between Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The dispute is particularly sensitive given the close cultural, economic, and political connections between the two neighboring nations, which have collaborated on various regional initiatives over the years. Mnangagwa’s comments have sparked a flurry of diplomatic activity, with Zambia appealing to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the African Union (AU) to mediate and help resolve the escalating tensions.
This diplomatic rift underscores the complex dynamics within the Southern African region, where historical alliances and regional security concerns intersect with broader geopolitical influences, including those of global superpowers.
The situation highlights the challenges faced by regional organizations like SADC in maintaining unity and addressing internal disputes among member states.
Munangagwa must be the last person to attack Zambia since he was raised in Zambia and his school fees up to University of Zambia paid for by the Zambian Government during our most difficulty years against colonial rule as a region and though this incident is unfortunate, our historical peace position still stands out as a great united nation against Munangagwa’s war threatening proposition.
