The Mama Samia Legal Aid Campaign has provided crucial support to over 300 individuals since its launch at the Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF 2024). This initiative, led by the Ministry of Constitution and Legal Affairs, has been pivotal in addressing a wide range of legal issues, predominantly land disputes, childcare matters, and gender-based violence.
Permanent Secretary Mary Makondo highlighted the overwhelming response from people seeking legal assistance. She noted that among the beneficiaries, 184 were men and 82 were women who received legal education, advice, and connections to independent lawyers. The campaign’s pavilion has seen a diverse array of legal inquiries, reflecting the pressing legal needs of the community.
The campaign, which started in April last year, aims to provide free legal services to those who cannot afford them. It has made significant strides, reaching over 493,000 individuals across various regions including Dodoma, Manyara, and Shinyanga. The initiative has successfully resolved numerous disputes, particularly in land-related issues which constitute 40% of the registered cases. Childcare disputes account for 12%, matrimonial matters 11%, and gender-based violence 8%.

One of the critical issues the campaign addresses is the surge in inheritance and wills disputes. Many Tanzanians do not write wills, leading to family conflicts and lengthy legal battles. The Permanent Secretary emphasized the importance of the campaign in educating the public about the legal processes and their rights. The government has also established a One Stop Center for Probate and Family Matters in Temeke to fast-track family-related disputes.
The Acting Director of Legal Aid Service, Ms. Ester Msambazi, expressed gratitude for the government’s initiative, underscoring the commitment of President Samia Suluhu Hassan and Minister Dr. Pindi Chana. She mentioned that many women seeking legal assistance are dealing with gender-based violence or looking for child support.
The campaign’s success at the trade fair is a testament to the critical need for accessible legal aid services in Tanzania. By providing free legal education and advice, the campaign is not only resolving individual cases but also empowering the public with knowledge about their legal rights and processes.
The DITF 2024 continues, the Mama Samia Legal Aid Campaign is expected to assist even more individuals, demonstrating the government’s dedication to ensuring justice and legal support for all Tanzanians.
