The Minister of Works, Innocent Bashungwa, has directed the Technical and Electrical Agency (TEMESA) and other water transport authorities to strictly adhere to safety regulations by ensuring ferries do not exceed passenger or cargo limits in order to safeguard the safety of passengers and their belongings.
Bashungwa issued these instructions in Lindi while addressing residents and citing the example of the October 3, 2024, accident in Congo, where the MV Merdi ferry sank in Lake Kivu, resulting in fatalities and loss of property.
“It is prohibited for TEMESA to overload ferries with passengers and cargo beyond capacity. Passengers should not board vessels that have been declared full, and don’t be stubborn about it because we are doing this to protect the workforce of our nation,” Bashungwa emphasized.
