The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has reported a tragic incident involving a capsized boat that resulted in the deaths of 25 migrants.
The boat was transporting individuals illegally from the Comorian island of Anjouan to the French territory of Mayotte when it sank last week.
According to IOM, the vessel capsized while making the perilous journey, which has claimed countless lives over the years as migrants attempt to cross the treacherous waters between the islands. In this recent incident, fishermen managed to rescue five individuals, but many others remain unaccounted for.
Survivors of the tragedy reported that the boat was carrying 30 passengers from various countries, including women and children. This heartbreaking incident highlights the ongoing risks faced by migrants seeking a better life, often resorting to dangerous sea routes in search of safety and opportunity.

A special report from the French Senate indicated that between 7,000 and 10,000 people have lost their lives attempting to cross from Comoros to Mayotte between 1995 and 2012. However, experts fear that this number may have increased significantly in recent years, as more individuals embark on this perilous journey.
The IOM’s findings serve as a grim reminder of the ongoing migrant crisis in the region and the urgent need for safer migration routes and better support for those attempting to flee hardship and violence in their home countries.
