In Kenya, a major investigation is underway as the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) summons over 50 police officers to address serious allegations.
These include claims of fatalities, severe injuries, and other illegal actions purportedly committed during the Finance Bill 2024 protests and the 2023 Azimio demonstrations.
The IPOA’s probe targets more than 15 senior police officials, including Francis Kooli, the County Police Commander for Bungoma. The investigation aims to scrutinize the conduct of these officers in connection with the aforementioned protests, which have raised significant public and legal concerns.
The officers are required to appear for questioning from Tuesday, September 17, through Thursday, September 19. This intensive examination period reflects the IPOA’s commitment to holding law enforcement accountable for any misconduct.
In preparation for this scrutiny, the Kenya Police Service headquarters has issued instructions for the affected officers to consult with their legal representatives on Monday. A communication from Elizabeth Marube, acting on behalf of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, stated, “Legal officers from the headquarters will convene with the implicated officers at the regional headquarters on September 16 to provide necessary briefings before their appearance before IPOA.”

Among those listed for investigation are Western region Commander Kooli, Kakamega Commander Lucy Kananu, Bungoma South Commander Wilson Muraya, and Kakamega Central’s Commander. Additionally, officials from the General Service Unit (GSU) and the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) are included in the ongoing probe.
The IPOA’s action underscores a broader effort to ensure accountability within the police force and address public grievances related to the handling of recent protests.
