Transport Minister, Prof. Makame Mbarawa, has presented the ministry’s revenue and expenditure estimates for the fiscal year 2024/2025 to Parliament in Dodoma today, May 6, 2024. He has requested Parliament’s approval for the ministry’s budget, which exceeds 2 trillion shillings.
In implementing the Plan and Budget for the fiscal year 2024/25, the ministry plans to utilize 2,729,676,417,000 shillings for recurrent expenditures and development projects. These funds will support ongoing projects such as the construction of the international standard gauge railway, refurbishment of existing railways in MGR, enhancement of the Tanzania Airline Company (ATCL), and refurbishment of ships on the Great Lakes.

A total of 190 billion shillings is allocated for the construction and refurbishment of ships. Specific allocations include:
– Construction of Ships on Lake Tanganyika:
– New passenger ship and cargo ship: 25 billion shillings
– New cargo ship for 3,500 tons: 35 billion shillings
– Shipbuilding factory for ships up to 5,000 tons: 30 billion shillings
– New cargo ship for 3,000 tons: 20 billion shillings
– Refurbishment on Lake Tanganyika:
– MV Liemba ship: 5 billion shillings
– MT Sangara oil tanker: 1.5 billion shillings
– MV Mwongozo ship: 300 million shillings
Furthermore, ATCL is allocated 324.5 billion shillings to enhance and strengthen the airline by acquiring three aircraft, spare parts, engines, and improving infrastructure.
For the construction of the SGR railway, an allocation of 1.511 trillion shillings has been made. Ongoing projects also include the revival of the MGR railway section from Kilosa to Kidatu (108 kilometers) with an allocation of 1 billion shillings and the refurbishment of the existing MGR railway with 312.03 billion shillings allocated.
