Residents of Mwabepande in Kinondoni District, Dar es Salaam, continue to face significant challenges with road infrastructure and transport due to the absence of paved roads.

This situation has hindered development in the area and become a recurring campaign promise from politicians, often left unfulfilled.

Hassan Polomo, the Chairman of Mwabepande Ward, stated that the road has been a long-standing unfulfilled promise spanning the tenure of former MP Rita Mlaki, through Halima Mdee, to the current MP, Josephat Gwajima. Despite repeated commitments, no meaningful action has been taken to improve the infrastructure.

“The Mwabepande road is used as a tool for political campaigns during elections, but once elections are over, nothing gets done,” Polomo lamented.

The chairman also revealed that he had filed formal complaints with the Surface and Marine Transport Regulatory Authority (SUMATRA), urging the agency to ensure that public buses (daladala) serve Mwabepande.

Hassan Chia, a local resident, described the transport situation as dire, explaining that no daladala buses operate in the area despite operators being granted permits to run the route from Makumbusho to Mwabepande. This has forced residents to rely on motorcycle taxis (bajaji), which charge a steep fare of TZS 1,000, creating a financial burden for many.

“We feel like outcasts. The cost of transport is too high, and it feels like we are not valued as other citizens,” Chia said.

Mzee wa Yanga, another Mwabepande resident, added that while MP Gwajima has made promises to improve the road, progress has been slow and unsatisfactory. “They grade the road, but no asphalt is laid, and it quickly deteriorates,” he explained. He further alleged that the mp provided money for hoes to bought to fill the potholes as they await progress on the road situation.

The residents of Mwabepande are now urging the government to act swiftly to upgrade the road, alleviating the transport challenges and enabling them to access essential services more easily.
