The Police Force in Arusha Region has been working tirelessly to ensure safety and stability in the area. From October 2024 to now, their efforts have led to the arrest of 126 individuals involved in various crimes, including rape, sodomy, and drug trafficking.
These arrests have resulted in convictions, with nine suspects already sentenced to significant prison terms.
Speaking about the ongoing operations, the Arusha Regional Police Commander, SACP Justine Masejo, shared the progress made so far. He highlighted how a focused approach to curbing crime is bringing about meaningful results.
Tackling Drug Trafficking
One of the biggest challenges has been combating drug trafficking. In recent months, police arrested 40 suspects in possession of 646.62 kilograms of khat and another 25 suspects with 178.5 kilograms of marijuana. Beyond seizures, 16 hectares of marijuana plantations were destroyed to disrupt the supply chain.
For those already tried in court, three individuals received 30-year sentences for trafficking marijuana. Other suspects are still awaiting their day in court as cases proceed through the justice system.
Addressing Gender-Based Violence
The fight against gender-based violence has also been a top priority. Police reported 51 arrests related to sexual offenses, including rape and sodomy. Among these cases, 20 involved allegations of rape. Of those charged, one suspect received a life sentence, while two others were handed 30-year sentences.

Cases of sodomy resulted in the arrest of 31 suspects. Two of them have already been convicted and sentenced to life in prison. Police have assured the public that the remaining cases are being handled diligently to ensure justice is served.
One suspect was also convicted of sexual harassment and sentenced to 18 years in prison. These sentences demonstrate a firm stance against such offenses and a commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals.
Cracking Down on Illegal Alcohol
In addition to drug-related crimes, authorities seized 128 liters of illegal alcohol, locally known as “Moshi,” and dismantled two distilleries. Thirty-five suspects were arrested in connection with the trade, and all have been charged in court.
Community Collaboration and Future Efforts
Commander Masejo expressed gratitude to community members who have come forward with information to assist law enforcement. “We owe much of our success to the cooperation we’ve received from the public,” he said. “Your vigilance helps us ensure a safer region for everyone.”
He also emphasized the importance of ongoing efforts to raise awareness about the consequences of engaging in criminal activities. These operations, combined with public support, aim to create a more peaceful and secure environment in Arusha.
As the cases progress and investigations continue, the Police Force has reassured residents of its commitment to justice and safety, urging the public to remain alert and report any suspicious activities.
