Tanzania and Ethiopia have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening economic cooperation for the sustainable development of their nations.
This commitment was highlighted during the opening of the First Meeting of the Joint Ministerial Commission at the Senior Officials level, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on December 16, 2024.
Ambassador Said Shaib Mussa, the Deputy Permanent Secretary of Tanzania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, and Ambassador Jemaludin Mustafa, the Director General of the Department for African Affairs in Ethiopia, emphasized the importance of leveraging agreed-upon cooperation opportunities between the two countries.
In his opening remarks, Ambassador Mussa expressed gratitude to the Ethiopian government for its warm hospitality and meticulous preparations for the meeting. He pointed out that this gathering serves as a formal platform to review the various areas of collaboration established since the signing of the Tanzania-Ethiopia Joint Cooperation Commission agreement in 2017.
“Tanzania and Ethiopia have numerous economic opportunities that remain underutilized. I hope our discussions today will allow us to share updates on our cooperation efforts and explore new avenues for collaboration that will benefit both nations,” Ambassador Mussa stated.

Co-Chair Ambassador Mustafa remarked on the historical significance of Tanzania-Ethiopia relations, tracing back to their collaboration during the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and continuing through their partnership within the African Union (AU). He highlighted that this partnership is vital for enhancing regional and international peace and security, as well as boosting trade, investment, agriculture, and tourism.

This Senior Officials Meeting serves as a preparatory session for the upcoming Joint Ministerial Commission Meeting scheduled for December 17, 2024, in Addis Ababa. The two countries are set to collaborate in various sectors, including political consultations, defense, legal affairs, finance, trade, tourism, agriculture, infrastructure development, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), health, education, and cultural exchanges.
