Russia has offered India its latest Izdeliye 177S fighter engine as part of a proposed multibillion-dollar modernization of the Indian Air Force’s Su-30MKI fleet, adding a major propulsion upgrade to a broader package of Russian defence proposals currently under discussion between the two countries.
The proposal is linked to India’s planned “Super Sukhoi” programme, which seeks to significantly upgrade the capabilities of its Su-30MKI fighters through new engines, radar, electronic warfare systems, avionics and weapons. Recent reports have placed the broader programme at around $11 billion, although the final scope and value remain subject to approval and negotiations.
According to Russian claims, the Izdeliye 177S can deliver up to 14.5 tonnes of afterburning thrust, while offering improved fuel efficiency compared with older engines. Russian engine developers have also claimed a potential 7 percent reduction in fuel consumption and a service life of up to 6,000 hours.
The engine was publicly showcased alongside Russia’s next-generation fighter technology during the Dubai Airshow, where it was presented as a more efficient powerplant capable of replacing older AL-31-family engines used on several Russian-designed aircraft. Its reported maximum afterburning thrust is approximately 14,500 kgf, while dry thrust is around 9,000 kgf.
India operates one of the world’s largest Su-30MKI fleets, with 272 aircraft ordered. The fighter has formed a central component of the Indian Air Force’s long-range air-combat capability for years and has been produced domestically by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) under licence.

Replacing or upgrading the existing propulsion system could provide the aircraft with improved acceleration, endurance and operational efficiency while potentially reducing fuel requirements. More efficient engines could also help extend the useful life of the fleet as India works to maintain its fighter strength while newer platforms, including the indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), remain under development.
The engine proposal is therefore significant because it could allow India to extract greater capability from an existing aircraft fleet rather than relying entirely on the rapid acquisition of new fighters.
The proposed modernization is expected to involve much more than propulsion. Plans associated with the Super Sukhoi programme include a new AESA radar, upgraded electronic warfare equipment, modern avionics, improved cockpit systems and integration with newer Indian weapons.
One of the major proposed radar upgrades is the Virupaaksha AESA radar, an enhanced development based on India’s Uttam radar technology. The upgraded Su-30MKI is also expected to receive improved self-protection and electronic warfare capabilities, strengthening its ability to operate against modern air-defence systems.
India is also looking at expanding the weapons available to the aircraft. The upgraded platform is expected to support advanced Indian missiles while Russia has separately been linked to proposals involving the long-range R-37M air-to-air missile, potentially giving the Su-30MKI greater reach against high-value aerial targets.
The 177S engine proposal comes as Moscow is presenting New Delhi with a broader package of military cooperation.
During recent talks between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin, defence cooperation featured prominently alongside energy, trade and technology. Russia has also been pushing its Su-57 fifth-generation fighter for India, including proposals involving production and technology cooperation with Indian industry.
Additional Russian proposals reportedly include further S-400 air-defence systems, the newer S-500 air-defence system, and advanced long-range missile capabilities. The discussions come as India seeks to modernize its armed forces while maintaining a balance between foreign procurement and its long-term drive for domestic defence production.
For Moscow, deeper cooperation with India would also strengthen one of its most important defence relationships at a time when Russia faces continuing Western sanctions and increasing pressure to expand defence exports and industrial partnerships outside traditional markets.
The timing is particularly important for New Delhi because the Indian Air Force has been dealing with a shortage of operational fighter squadrons. Modernizing the Su-30MKI fleet could provide a relatively rapid way of improving combat capability while India develops and introduces future indigenous aircraft.
The Super Sukhoi concept is consequently viewed as a bridge between India’s existing fourth-generation-plus fleet and future platforms such as the AMCA.
However, the reported Russian engine offer should not yet be interpreted as a finalized procurement decision. Key elements of the wider upgrade still require approval, detailed negotiations and integration studies.
If adopted, the 177S could nevertheless become one of the most important elements of the Super Sukhoi programme, potentially giving India’s large Su-30MKI fleet more thrust, improved fuel efficiency and a longer modernization path while Moscow seeks to deepen its strategic defence partnership with New Delhi.
