Tanzania is now the leading player in trade within the East African Community (EAC), surpassing Kenya, a country long recognized for its dominance in the bloc’s economic landscape.
Kenyan President William Ruto acknowledged this shift during the EAC@25 anniversary celebration in Arusha, Tanzania. Addressing regional leaders and stakeholders, he described the development as “positive competition” and a sign of the EAC’s growing dynamism.
“Tanzania has now taken the lead in trade within the EAC, a position Kenya previously held,” Ruto remarked, emphasizing that the shift signals an opportunity for Kenya to rethink and revitalize its economic strategies in the region.
Tanzania’s rise can be attributed to significant investments in industries, improved export policies, and infrastructure development that has enhanced trade facilitation. Its proactive engagement with regional partners has drawn international investors and bolstered its economic standing.
During the summit, which doubled as the 23rd Ordinary EAC Heads of State Meeting, leaders discussed critical issues impacting the bloc. Topics included Somalia’s aspirations to join the EAC and strategies to deepen economic integration. Presidents Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania and Évariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi, alongside other heads of state, highlighted the importance of bolstering trade across member states.
