President Samia Suluhu Hassan celebrated her birthday this year in style by leading citizens and various groups in planting 4,720 trees at Donge Muwanda in Tumbatu on Saturday (January 27, 2024).
According to a State House press statement issued on Saturday, 120 of these trees are fruit species.
The statement quoted the Head of State as saying that the day was marked with a tree-planting campaign at the 35.7-acre plot because the environment has been adversely affected, especially in the Isles.
The President urged for the frequent planting of trees, including mangrove species, to restore the natural state of the sea and prevent soil erosion.
“The President urged wananchi to protect [the planted] trees for the betterment of future generations,” the statement added.
She directed the office of Zanzibar’s First Vice President to halt unauthorized sand collection and the cutting of bricks from rocks, issuing permits for the same only to wananchi living in elevated areas.
Meanwhile, President Samia phoned Njombe Regional Commissioner, Mr. Anthony Mtaka, to instruct all leaders in the area to continue with the nutrition campaign, which will subsequently help children grow healthily.
