President Samia Suluhu Hassan is leading mourners today in paying their final respects to Lawrence Mafuru, the former Executive Secretary of the Planning Commission, who passed away on November 9, 2024, while undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospital in India.
The farewell ceremony is being held at the historic Karimjee grounds, drawing dignitaries, national leaders, and close family members to honor Mafuru’s legacy and contributions to Tanzania.
Known for his significant influence in Tanzania’s banking and financial sectors, Mafuru’s passing has left a notable void in the country’s economic leadership. President Samia, in attendance to honor Mafuru, is joined by several other prominent figures, including Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa; Minister of State for Planning and Investment Prof. Kitila Mkumbo; Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Mussa Zungu; former Chief Secretary Ambassador Ombeni Sefue; and the Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Albert Chalamila.

In her tribute, President Samia praised Mafuru’s service and dedication to Tanzania’s economic development, noting his steadfast commitment to improving the nation’s financial systems. Leaders from across sectors echoed these sentiments, highlighting Mafuru’s integrity and contributions to public service.
Lawrence Mafuru will be laid to rest on Friday, November 15, at Kondo Cemetery in Tegeta, Dar es Salaam.
