President Donald Trump has signed a new executive order , imposing sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC) in response to its investigations involving Israel, a key U.S. ally.
The ICC has issued an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who visited the White House this week, in connection with alleged war crimes related to his military actions in Gaza following the Hamas terror attack on Israel in October 2023.
The attack resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 Israelis, with around 250 others taken hostage in Gaza. In response, Israel launched a ground and air offensive, which the health ministry controlled by Hamas reported has led to the deaths of tens of thousands of Palestinians, including many children.
Neither the United States nor Israel are members of or recognize the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Trump’s order stated that the U.S. would impose “tangible and significant consequences” on those accountable for the ICC’s “transgressions.” These consequences may include freezing assets and property, as well as barring ICC officials, employees, and their families from entering the U.S.
