China has officially chosen Tanzania as a central hub for expanding its Belt and Road Initiative across Africa, a decision highlighted during a recent meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
This strategic move follows the signing of a crucial agreement among China, Tanzania, and Zambia to rehabilitate the Tazara railway. This significant infrastructure project aims to improve rail and sea transportation in East Africa, a region rich in resources.
During the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in Beijing, President Xi Jinping, along with Tanzanian President Hassan and Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema, endorsed a memorandum of understanding to refurbish the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (Tazara) line. Spanning 1,860 kilometers (1,156 miles), this railway is vital for enhancing regional trade and connectivity.
The rehabilitation of the Tazara railway is expected to transform transportation efficiency in East Africa, providing a crucial link between the region and global markets.
