Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Dr. Doto Biteko, emphasized that the government will not overlook the contributions of non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
Speaking at the annual NGO Forum held in Dodoma on September 6, 2024, Dr. Biteko reaffirmed the government’s commitment to recognizing the crucial role these organizations play in advancing national development.
“At no point will the government disregard or diminish the contributions of NGOs,” stated Dr. Biteko. He highlighted that these organizations are essential partners in the country’s development across various sectors including economic, governance, and social realms. There are currently 9,777 NGOs in Tanzania, all of which aim to serve the Tanzanian populace.
Dr. Biteko elaborated on the symbiotic relationship between the government and NGOs. He noted that while the primary responsibility of the government is to serve its citizens, NGOs also play a significant role in assisting the government to fulfill its duties more efficiently. Rather than being adversaries, NGOs should be seen as important allies in national development.

He further detailed the tangible benefits provided by NGOs, including a substantial financial impact. NGOs have channeled 2.6 trillion Tanzanian Shillings across the country and have employed over 21,000 individuals in the sector. These organizations have been pivotal in advancing government efforts through the implementation of various projects and initiatives, particularly in the areas of health, agriculture, education, water, and other essential services.
Additionally, NGOs contribute to improving social service delivery, expanding job opportunities, especially for youth, women, and individuals with disabilities, and accelerating both individual and national economic growth.
Dr. Biteko’s remarks underscore the government’s recognition of the vital contributions made by NGOs and highlight a commitment to continued collaboration for the betterment of Tanzanian society.
