Farmers growing avocados in Tanzania are poised to achieve significant economic success as China, the world’s most populous country, has approved Tanzanian companies to export avocados directly to its market.
This pivotal development, effective from August 14 this year, marks a significant milestone for the Tanzanian horticultural sector.
The Ministry of Agriculture has officially notified the Tanzania Horticultural Association (TAHA), the leading industry body for vegetables and fruits, about China’s decision. This breakthrough follows years of dedicated efforts to enter the lucrative Chinese market. The initial push began in 2018 when TAHA recognized the immense potential and value of the Chinese market for Tanzanian avocados. The association subsequently reached out to the Tanzanian government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, requesting diplomatic and official support to access this vast market.
Dr. Jacqueline Mkindi, CEO of TAHA, expressed her gratitude, stating, “We are thankful to the Ministry of Agriculture for their support. When we first approached them in 2018 with information about the Chinese market, they demonstrated a willingness and readiness to assist us in accessing this opportunity. We also appreciate the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for their involvement in facilitating this process.”

The opening of the Chinese market is expected to have a transformative impact on Tanzanian avocado farmers. It not only promises increased revenue but also provides an opportunity for local farmers to establish a significant presence in one of the world’s largest consumer markets.
This development aligns with ongoing efforts to enhance Tanzania’s agricultural export sector and support sustainable economic growth.
The successful entry into the Chinese market represents a major achievement for Tanzanian agriculture and highlights the potential for further expansion in global markets.
