Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has directed the Ministry of Transport to strengthen its oversight of the Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC), aiming to improve services on the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and ensure its long-term sustainability.
Addressing the conclusion of the 16th parliamentary session in Dodoma, the Prime Minister underscored the government’s focus on enhancing the transport sector, particularly the ongoing construction of the SGR.
Majaliwa expressed satisfaction with the progress of the SGR project, which continues to be a cornerstone in the country’s infrastructure development. The express train service between Dar es Salaam and Morogoro, launched on June 14, 2024, has now been extended to Dodoma. President Samia Suluhu Hassan officially inaugurated the new service on August 1, 2024, marking a major milestone in Tanzania’s efforts to modernize its transportation network.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the government will prioritize the completion of the SGR and the modernization of passenger train services this financial year. The extension of rail services is expected to bolster trade, ease transportation, and stimulate economic growth, particularly in key regions like Dodoma and Morogoro.

Additionally, Majaliwa commended the Ministry of Agriculture for its efforts to ensure the availability and equitable distribution of agricultural inputs ahead of the upcoming farming season. These efforts are tailored to the agro-climatic needs of different regions to maximize productivity and ensure food security.
The SGR project is seen as a pivotal step towards improving connectivity within Tanzania and with neighboring countries, further positioning the nation as a regional trade hub. With continued government oversight and commitment, the SGR is expected to enhance not only transportation but also economic activities nationwide.
