Vice President Philip Mpango has revealed that he will not be seeking re-election as President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s running mate in the upcoming 2025 elections.
At 68, Mpango, who has served Tanzania for decades in various capacities, expressed his belief that it was time for the younger generation to step forward and take the reins of leadership.
The announcement came on February 11, 2025, during the opening of the e-Government Annual Conference, which brought together over 1,300 ICT professionals from across the country. Speaking candidly to the attendees, Mpango shared his thoughts on his long and impactful career, which includes 14 years as a university lecturer, five years at the World Bank, and leadership positions in government, including at the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) and as Minister for Finance.
Mpango has also spent the last four years serving as the country’s Vice President, a role that has seen him contribute significantly to national development, both economically and socially. His tenure has left an undeniable mark on Tanzania, particularly in the areas of fiscal management and public policy.
Yet, despite his achievements, Mpango acknowledged the changing times and the increasing number of young Tanzanians ready to lead. “I have had the privilege of serving in some of the most important roles in government, but I believe it’s now time for the younger generation to take over and guide this great country into the future,” Mpango said, his voice filled with sincerity.

His decision aligns with a broader shift in Tanzania’s leadership dynamics, where there is a growing recognition of the potential in younger leaders. As the country moves closer to the 2025 elections, many are hopeful that new voices will emerge, bringing fresh perspectives to the challenges facing the nation.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan, speaking at a special meeting of the ruling party, Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM), expressed her respect and understanding of Mpango’s decision. She confirmed that he had requested to step aside from the election race, and emphasized how much the country owes him for his years of dedicated service.
