Tanzania is pulling out all the stops to ensure it is ready to co-host two significant football tournaments: the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in 2025 and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027.

Working alongside Kenya and Uganda, the country aims to showcase not just its love for football but also its ability to organize world-class sporting events.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan has appointed legal expert and journalist Prof. Palamagamba Kabudi to oversee Tanzania’s preparations for the tournaments. His role includes ensuring the timely completion of essential infrastructure and that all hosting obligations align with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards.

The Tanzanian government has already committed over 8 billion shillings to refurbish training grounds in Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, and Arusha. These upgrades include installing better drainage systems, improved lighting, and state-of-the-art seating for spectators. Beyond these enhancements, five new training grounds are also under development to boost the country’s hosting capacity.

Suma JKT, a military-owned construction company, is spearheading these projects. Officials have highlighted that this investment goes beyond the immediate benefits of the tournaments—it is a strategic step to elevate Tanzania’s sports infrastructure and position the nation as a preferred destination for international events.

Looking further ahead, Tanzania’s co-hosting of AFCON 2027 with Kenya and Uganda is expected to strengthen regional ties and attract significant attention from fans and stakeholders across Africa and beyond. These tournaments are poised to leave a lasting legacy, inspiring young athletes and uniting communities through the power of sport.
