The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, has called on the Ministry of Energy and the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) to ensure the timely completion of the 132kV power transmission line project from Tabora to Katavi, along with the construction of a power receiving, stepping-down, and distribution station. This will enable the Katavi Region to be connected to the national grid by September this year.
President Dr. Samia made these remarks today, July 13, 2024, while speaking to the residents of Mlele District in the Katavi Region after inspecting the progress of the Tabora-Katavi 132kV power transmission line and the Inyonga power receiving, stepping-down, and distribution station. She expressed satisfaction with the progress of these projects.

“I wish for Katavi to completely move away from the use of generators, which are very costly. The completion of these projects will allow the people of Katavi to utilize electricity for economic benefits and enhance investment. The government has invested heavily in implementing these projects, and I urge the citizens to seize the opportunities that come with having reliable and sufficient electricity,” said Dr. Samia.
She also commended TANESCO for the excellent work in implementing electricity projects and urged them to speed up customer connections once the projects are completed.
She emphasized that electricity is crucial for individuals as well as the industrial economy, and all these efforts are part of the implementation of the Chama cha Mapinduzi’s manifesto, which directs the provision of adequate electricity in the country.
In presenting the implementation report to the President, TANESCO Managing Director, Mr. Gissima Nyamo-Hanga, stated that once completed, the project will save approximately TZS 2.2 billion per month, which is currently spent on fuel to run the power plants used in Katavi once it is connected to the national grid.
