President Samia Suluhu Hassan has directed the National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) to establish Katavi as an independent zone for the procurement and storage of food grains. Over the weekend, the president inaugurated modern grain storage warehouses and silos in the region, signaling a substantial increase in storage capacity from 5,000 to 28,000 tonnes of grains.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, President Samia emphasized the critical need to offer fair prices to farmers nationwide. She highlighted the strategic importance of Karema Port on Lake Tanganyika, describing it as a pivotal hub that could stimulate economic growth not only locally but also in neighboring countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Zambia, and Burundi.
“Karema Port holds undeniable economic viability and growth potential,” President Samia remarked, underscoring its role as a strategic gateway facilitating trade and connectivity across borders. The president outlined the port’s economic benefits, stressing its potential to create multiplier effects that could uplift communities in the region and beyond.

The newly launched grain storage facilities are set to enhance food security measures across Katavi, ensuring better preservation of crops and minimizing losses incurred after harvest. This initiative aligns with Tanzania’s broader agricultural development goals, aiming to strengthen the country’s resilience against food shortages and economic fluctuations.
President Samia’s directive to elevate Katavi into a dedicated grain procurement and storage zone reflects her administration’s commitment to agricultural modernization and equitable economic development. The move is expected to streamline the food supply chain, improve distribution efficiency, and empower local farmers through fair pricing mechanisms.
Looking ahead, the government plans to further develop Karema Port as a key node in regional trade networks, leveraging its strategic location to foster economic integration and prosperity among East African nations. The president urged stakeholders to maximize the port’s potential, harnessing its geographic advantage to catalyze sustainable development and cross-border cooperation.
The establishment of modern grain storage infrastructure in Katavi marks a pivotal step towards achieving Tanzania’s food security objectives, ensuring that agricultural productivity translates into tangible benefits for farmers and communities alike.
